At Dicksons of Inverness, we are proud to offer a range of new and used Nissan vehicles, including an exciting selection of electrified models, and the fully electric Nissan Ariya. As Nissan continues to drive innovation in sustainable mobility, a recent survey commissioned by the brand highlights a significant shift in the way young city dwellers view transportation.

The Next Generation’s Commitment to Change

Nissan’s global survey, conducted by the think tank Economist Impact, explored the future mobility choices of young urbanites across 15 cities. The findings were clear: over half (57%) of young city residents are willing to alter their travel habits to reduce their carbon footprints. The growing enthusiasm for electric vehicles (EVs) underscores the increasing awareness and demand for sustainable transport solutions.

EV ownership among survey respondents is set to rise from 23% today to more than 35% in the next decade. This shift is even more pronounced in emerging cities, where 44% of young residents see themselves driving an EV within the next five years, compared to 31% in developed urban areas.

Embracing Innovation in Sustainable Transport

Beyond the preference for EVs, young people in urban areas also expressed strong interest in emerging technologies, including energy storage, alternative fuels, and vehicle-to-everything (V-to-X) connectivity. More than 40% of respondents indicated that these advancements will influence their future mobility choices.

Ritu Bhandari, Asia-Pacific Sustainability Lead at Economist Impact, commented on the study, stating: “This research explores how younger generations envision the future of mobility – an essential perspective, as their choices will directly shape the evolving mobility landscape.

“Our findings reveal that for sustainable mobility to succeed, cities need to balance environmental goals with real commuter priorities like affordability, convenience and inclusivity.

“Achieving this requires flexible, multimodal solutions that seamlessly integrate public transit, electric vehicles, shared mobility and active transport into a connected, accessible network for all residents with diverse needs.”

Nissan’s Commitment to a Greener Future

Nissan has long been at the forefront of vehicle electrification, striving to make sustainable transport accessible and practical for drivers worldwide. Lavanya Wadgaonkar, Nissan’s Corporate Vice President of Global Communications, reinforced this commitment, stating:

“We believe in making mobility electrified and sustainable – it is a defining expectation shaping the future of transportation.

“This survey reaffirms the growing demand for electrification and the need to create more awareness, but long-term success hinges on making EV adoption seamless, practical, and cost-effective. At Nissan, we leverage data-driven research and innovation to bridge gaps, ensuring that electrification is not just an option, but a core component of the mobility landscape.”
